Welcome back! We have an exciting term ahead in Year 1!
This term we began with a review of sounds from Stage 4, Stage 4+ and Stage 5 from the Little Learners Love Literacy Program. This term, we will learn Stage 6 digraphs (/sh/, /ch/, /tch/, /th/, /ng/, /ph/ and /wh/). Our homework is based on revision of sounds from the previous week, The Year 1 teachers have been very impressed with everyone’s effort! Remember you can also practise reading with your child by using the Decodable Readers Australia app. This is an excellent app which not only allows you to read simple decodable books at home, but also has a range of simple lessons to build reading skills.
In Writing, we will be learning to expand simple sentences by adding more detail. We can add ‘where’ (setting) details such as ‘at school’ or ‘on the playground’. We can also add ‘when’ (time) details, such as ‘last night’ or ‘after school’.
We have begun writing using our Story Champs program. We listen to a story read aloud and identify the characters, the problem, the feelings, the action and the solution. We retell the story to our partner, and carefully listen to them retell the story to us. We retell the story by writing a sentence about each picture.
We have been learning lots of interesting things about animals and different habitats in our Knowledge Unit. Our guide, a little rat named ‘Rattenborough’, will be taking us to many different habitats around the world, like the Arctic Tundra and introduce us to some of the animals that live there, such as polar bears and walruses!
Our daily numeracy lessons have the students working hard to develop their number fluency and continually reviewing previous lessons. We have been using Base 10 concrete materials to make and count two-digit numbers. We have also been measuring and comparing items using non-formal units, such as Unifix.
Our SEL lessons with The Resilience Project have been focussing on Gratitude - which means being grateful for the things we have. We use our TRP journals to complete activities and record our emotions. Emotional Literacy has helped us to identify emotions within ourselves and in others.
We have continued our weekly AUSLAN sessions with AUSLAN Education Services, where we watch an interactive lesson on a topic. We have learnt how to sign letters, basic school signs, family members and farm animals.
