Level 3

Level  3

3MW started Term 2 with two very special guest speakers – Constable Steph and Mayor Spears who both spoke eagerly to the students about their roles in making and enforcing rules and laws. Students had an opportunity to ask our guest speakers thoughtful questions to find out more about the journey to becoming a police officer or the Mayor, their favourite part of the job and challenges they face each day. Mayor Spears explained how her medallion called the ‘drop’ is made up of important parts of Maroondah Council. Constable Steph gave us a taste of the police car sirens, boy are they loud!

Our focus for Literacy has been writing summaries after reading stories using the steps ‘Somebody, Wanted, But, So, Then’ process. Non-fiction (fact) text summaries are completed by writing a main idea sentence and including important supporting details. This week we moved to making inferences. These are made by using our observations and schema (current knowledge/experiences) to connect clues and ideas from the text and come up with a conclusion. Students drew inferences from the cartoon pictures and their current knowledge to finish the final box. It was interesting to see students with the same cartoon draw very different conclusions!

Numeracy has been all about measurement. Students enjoyed researching the heights of different animals, drawing them and placing the sketches onto a graph. Our animals ranged from a hedgehog at 6cm tall to a giraffe at 470cm. There are also some tall sharks in the ocean!

Telling the time on both analogue and digital clocks was an enjoyable topic as well as exploring money using the website ‘Money Master’ to make totals using different combinations of notes and coins.  And finally, a 3MW week wouldn’t be complete without a few shaving cream ‘tch’ spelling words.
