Routines

It has been wonderful to witness the effortless way in which our staff and students have embedded their daily routines in the classroom. Routines are important for smooth transitions and help to reduce anxiety by providing predictable environments. We use consistent routines across the school at various times of the day:

  • morning routine
  • afternoon routine
  • eating routine
  • moving around the school routine - following our 3 S's - Silent, Straight and Still
  • learning routines - during instructional time, preparing our resources and packing up

We hope you are getting back into your own routines, before and after school, as this can also assist in your child being settled and focused whilst at school.

In the classroom, we use a visual diary which is set up each morning and referred to during the day. This helps children to feel prepared and know what to expect as the day flows. It also promotes independence. You can also use visual diaries, timetables and routines at home to assist with getting ready for school, home learning or bedtime.

Lunchtime Clubs

Each day at lunchtime, we offer staff facilitated clubs. These are a valuable opportunity to support students who might feel overwhelmed at lunchtime. There are many benefits to lunchtime clubs, such as:

  • improved peer-to-peer and teacher-student relationships and wellbeing
  • a sense of personal empowerment and student voice
  • development of social and emotional skills
  • improved academic engagement
  • positive school climate and increased student sense of safety.

Please remind your child of the many clubs we have available at St Mary's:

  • Craft
  • Fun Club
  • Garden Fun
  • Bikes
  • Active Fun
  • Games
