Secondary 3

Hello from Secondary 3

We have had a very busy start to our term. We have been exploring Ancient China for our Culminating Project at the end of this semester. The students are looking forward to finding out about the lives of the ancient Egyptians who became Mummies and people who lived in Roman times.

In Science we are currently watching our seeds growing. We have looked at the different variables involved in plant growth. The students have experimented with giving the seeds different amounts of water. Their predictions about giving seeds no water and too much  water were correct, the plants did not sprout or have not done as well as seeds that have warmth, sunlight and frequent small amounts of water. Every day the students have been excited to find the changes in their seedlings that have occurred overnight.

In Maths we have been working with numbers and reviewing addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. The students have been practising their subitising skills and regrouping numbers.

The students have been enjoying our poetry unit in which we have looked at Australia Poetry. They are very good at finding rhyming words at the end of the lines and repetition in the poems. The students have found that alliteration and tongue twisters are other techniques used by poets to make their poem much more interesting. The imagery in some poems is very strong and the students would like to share a poem that we read this week about chooks.

Last Night I dreamed of Chickens

By Jack Prelutsky

Last night I dreamed of chickens,

there were chickens everywhere,

they were standing on my stomach,

they were resting in my hair, they were pecking at my pillow,

they were ruffling up their feathers

as they raced about my bed.

They were on the chairs and tables,

they were on the chandeliers,

they were roosting in the corners, they were clucking in my ears,

there were chickens, chickens, chickens

as far as I could see.........

when I woke today, I noticed

there were eggs on top of me.
