Ulverstone Assistant Principal Report

One of the things I enjoy most about teaching is seeing students extend themselves by trying something new for the first time. It takes courage, but the rewards can be great and long lasting.

Think about the last time you learnt something new – how to waterski, or how to ride a bike, or how to solve a Rubics cube, or how to whistle with your hands?

  • Did you get it perfect the first time? Probably not – that’s normal.
  • Did you feel embarrassed because you couldn’t do it? If so, did you give up or push through and try again?

I REMEMBER….

  • Learning to ride a bike – first the pain from a grazed knee, then the exhilaration when I could do it!
  • Learning to water ski, flipping over several times, then standing wobbly while my Mum and brother cheered me on, and Dad patiently drove the boat around again and again.
  • Learning to drive – failing my first license test but trying again. Reminding myself that if every other driver did it, so can I!

What makes the difference between giving up or having another go?

Answer: 1. Feeling safe AND 2. SELF -TALK

Safe places are where there is a culture of encouragement, celebration, and great examples. Where experimentation can happen.

At Leighland Christian School we give awards for achievement in many areas, and I will be introducing a new GROWTH AWARD for students who try new things and demonstrate a growth mindset.

Let’s remember to encourage and cheer on those who have a go – like the person who comes last in a swimming race, or the person who gets up in front of class to give a talk for the first time!

I look forward to getting to know you as I see the things you are trying and commend your efforts.
