In the spirit of reconciliation, Modbury School acknowledges the Traditional Custodians
of the country throughout Australia and their connections to land, sea and community.
We pay our respect to their elders past and present and extend that respect to all
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today.
Dear families,
Can you believe we are at the end of Term 1? Where has the time gone? It has been an extremely busy and fun-filled term at Modbury School P-6, with so many things happening across our school. With the school holidays coming up, please continue to encourage your child to read every day as it is so important.
We have a new website!
We have been working extremely hard this term with the Department for Education to develop our new website, provided to us by the Department for Education. Please note our existing website will no longer be available from the end of this term.
Please take the time to check it out! It looks amazing!
Volunteer Sessions - Term 2
We will be running Volunteer training sessions next term. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer, please check out our Term 2 School Calendar in this newsletter for dates.
Australian Early Development Census (AEDC)
The AEDC is a nationwide census of early childhood development. The AEDC provides a comprehensive snapshot of the developmental status of children entering their first full year of full-time school. Our Reception children will participate in this next term.
What is the AEDC?
The Australian Early Development Census (AEDC):
• is an Australian Government Initiative
• has been conducted nationally every three years since 2009, with more than 95% of schools participating
• is a national progress measure of early child development
• collects data relating to five key areas of early childhood development
• involves teachers of children in their first year of full-time school completing the Australian version of the Early Development Instrument (AvEDI), for each child in their class.
For our families of Reception children, please see the attached Parent Letter.
You may have noticed that we now have 2 bells ring in the morning before school. This is to support our students in being orgainsed to line up and be ready to start their day when their teacher arrives. For our Early Years classes, you may have noticed that some of our other staff are walking these students upstairs each day. This is to allow our Early Years teachers to be providing some extra reading support to some of our students.
Shadow Minister for Education Visit
On Wednesday 3 April, the Shadow Minister for Education, Hon John Gardner and the Hon Michelle Lensink MLC met with our principal, Sara Slater and our student leaders, Connor, Cadence, Alex, Zoya and Aaradhya. Our Student Leaders have written a recount of the day. Please see their section in this newsletter to read all about the visit, from our Student Leader perspective.
Nepali Pathsala Annual Day
On Saturday 6th April, I had the pleasure and honour of attending the Nepali Pathsala Day and Year 12 Graduates Award ceremony. It was a wonderful ceremony showcasing the Nepalese culture. Nepali Pathsala's commitment and vision centres around preserving and promoting Nepali language, tradition and culture through education, dance and sports.
I was invited to talk to the students and acknowledge their success, studies and accomplishments, and how fortunate they are to have such wonderful support systems from family and friends who support their education.
Seeing our Modbury School students participate in their cultural dance and shine on stage was fantastic. They looked stunning! It was also a great honour to meet His Excellency Kailash Rai Pokharek - Nepalese Ambassador to Australia; to stand alongside Bina Dhamala (Nepali Pathsala Adelaide's Principal) to present the award certificates to the students; meet Ms. Mtanju Khadka from the South Australian Multicultural Commission and Marijka Ryan - Mayor of the City of Tea Tree Gully.
Uniform update
Leadership have worked with the Governing Council and we are thrilled to announce that we have partnered with new suppliers to enhance our school uniform offerings! One of the great positives about our new supplier is that they manufacture locally. Our new suppliers have been carefully selected to provide durable, comfortable, and stylish uniform pieces that reflect our school's values and ethos. The Governing Council approved the new uniform at our Governing Council meeting in Week 3.
We have some new designs and options to choose from, ensuring both quality and style for our students. Please see the images below for the new designs we have coming:
Jumper - $31.00
Soft Shell jacket (this will be a pre-order item only)
Polo - $32.00
Beanie (Term 2 instead of a hat) - $15.00
The soft shell jacket is super cosy and warm and looks amazing!
This will be a pre-order item only, as we will not be keeping these as part of our regular stock at school. We already have some samples for your child to try on for accurate sizing (size 6, 10 and 14 only) at the Front Office. Our pre-order portal will open this week and close at the end of Week 2 next term.
Our new uniform lines will be available next term and we can't wait to see our students wearing the latest designs. These items will be available to purchase via Qkr! or by credit card in the Front Office. Please start to get your orders in next term. Particularly the beanies, as the cold weather will be upon us before we know it, and we want to have our students warm at school.
Staffing Update
We wish to announce that Liz Allen, our Business Manager will be retiring at the end of Term 2. After 33 years of dedicated service, Liz has been at the centre of our school, managing finances, organising events, and always lending a helping hand with a warm smile. Her commitment to excellence and unwavering support have left an unforgettable mark on our school community over the years. At the end of next term, we will farewell Liz and will help celebrate her countless contributions and wish her a retirement filled with joy, relaxation, and new adventures.
We are currently in the process of recruiting a new Business Manager and will keep our community updated.
We also wish to advise that Christian Kotz, who currently teaches in Room 14 will be taking up other opportunities for the remainder of this year. We wish to advise that Jake Green will be teaching in Room 14 on Mon-Wed in Term 2. Mickaylah Mertin will continue to teach Thurs-Fri in Room 14.
Save the Date - Working Bee for our school
Please save the date for a working bee to tidy up across our school. Our working bee has been tentatively scheduled for Saturday 11th May.
