Gospel Reflection

6th Sunday of Easter

Summary

Jesus tells His disciples that anyone who loves Him will keep His word, and God will live with them. He promises the Holy Spirit, who will continue to teach and remind them of everything He said. Jesus leaves them His peace - a peace that is different from what the world offers - and encourages them not to be afraid. Though He is going away, He assures them that His departure will bring them joy because He is returning to the Father.

Reflection

Jesus knew that change and uncertainty can make us feel worried or alone. In this passage, He gently reminds His friends - and us - that love brings God's presence into our lives. When we choose to love, follow His teachings, and open our hearts, God makes a home in us.

Even when things feel difficult, Jesus gives us peace that is steady and lasting. It’s not a peace that comes from everything being perfect - but a peace that reminds us we are deeply loved and never alone. And with the Holy Spirit, we have a constant helper to guide, teach, and comfort us.

This is Jesus’ gift to us: love, peace, and presence. And it’s a gift we’re called to share.

  • What does God’s peace look like in our community?
  • How do we help each other remember Jesus’ words?
  • What are some simple ways we can be people of love and peace—at school, at home, or in the parish?

Gospel Reading: John 14:23-29

Jesus said to his disciples:

‘If anyone loves me he will keep my word,

and my Father will love him,

and we shall come to him and make our home with him.

Those who do not love me do not keep my words.

And my word is not my own:

it is the word of the one who sent me.

I have said these things to you while still with you;

but the Advocate, the Holy Spirit,

whom the Father will send in my name,

will teach you everything

and remind you of all I have said to you.

Peace I bequeath to you, my own peace I give you,

a peace the world cannot give,

this is my gift to you.

Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid.

You heard me say: I am going away and shall return.

If you loved me you would have been glad to know that I am going to the Father,

for the Father is greater than I.

I have told you this now before it happens,

so that when it does happen you may believe.’

Prayer

Jesus, our friend and teacher, Thank You for the gift of peace that calms our hearts. Thank You for the Holy Spirit, who helps us remember Your words and shows us how to live with love. When we are afraid or uncertain, help us to trust that You are with us. May we welcome Your presence into our lives and share Your peace with those around us. Help us to listen, to love, and to follow You more closely each day.

Amen
