Year 5 News

Reading
In Reading, we have started off Term 2 by focusing on and learning about summarising non-fiction texts. We’ve also linked our Inquiry topic to our Reading learning by summarising non-fiction texts about extreme weather events. Students have practised finding the main idea and key details in various different non-fiction texts while also building their understanding of how these natural disasters affect Earth’s surface. It’s been a great way to combine our reading skills with real-world knowledge!
“It's easy to find the main idea in a story if you have the right resources” Zach 5D
“The main idea is easy to find if you look in the right spot” Adam 5D
“It's easy to find the main idea in a non-fiction compared to a Fiction book” Rylie 5D
Writing
During the first two weeks of Term 2, students have been revisiting the structure and language features of information reports. We have been looking at how to organise our ideas clearly using headings, subheadings and paragraphs. Students have also explored the use of technical vocabulary, and using a formal tone to engage and inform their readers. Over the coming weeks, we will be linking our Inquiry topic on extreme weather events to our writing lessons. As we learn and research more about natural disasters like, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, bushfires, and cyclones, we will use our knowledge to help us write information reports. It’s made our writing more meaningful because we’re sharing facts and ideas that we’ve researched ourselves!
“I have been researching Cyclones in Writing. It has been so interesting to find out facts that I didn’t know.” - Holly 5C
Maths
In Maths, we have spent some time learning about chance and probability by exploring the language of likelihood—using words like certain, likely, even chance, unlikely, and impossible to describe how probable different events are. We’ve played games and completed hands-on activities to help us understand and compare chances in real-life situations. We’ve also been focusing on telling time using both analog and digital clocks. Students have been practising how to read the time to the minute, convert between 12-hour and 24-hour time, and solve problems involving elapsed time. These are important everyday skills that help us stay on track and manage our time!
“We see time everywhere, for example: electronics, bus timetables and at school.” - Chelsy 5C
“The short hand means hours. Long hand means minutes.” - Prish 5C
Inquiry
This term in Inquiry, Year 5 students will be exploring the fascinating topic of ‘Our Place in Space’. Over the past two weeks, we have investigated the impact of sudden geological changes and extreme weather on Earth’s surface—looking closely at events like earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, floods, bushfires, and cyclones. We have been learning about how both natural forces and human activities can influence these events and shape the land we live on.
Social and Emotional Learning
In Social and Emotional Learning, we’ve been focusing on Personal Strengths, learning how to identify and celebrate the positive qualities that make each of us unique and special! We started by exploring what character strengths are, and then shared the strengths we admire in others. Students have been learning how to recognise and use their strengths in everyday life—whether it’s showing kindness to a friend, staying curious during learning, or being brave in new situations. We have also had the chance to practise using our strengths in real-life scenarios.
Special Event
Police Incursion: At Craigieburn Primary School, we value strong connections with our local support services. As part of this, our Year 5 students took part in a special session run by the Pro-Active Unit. This one hour session is designed to help us better understand the role of police, feel safe in our community, and learn how to make positive choices.
“I thought it was really interesting to learn how to be safe online.” - Aleisha 5C
