Year 4 News

Reading

As part of our literacy program, Year 4 students are currently engaging in a novel study of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. This classic story provides a fun and imaginative backdrop for developing key reading comprehension strategies.

Throughout the unit, students are practicing how to:

-Make predictions based on clues in the text

-Visualize scenes using descriptive language

-Ask questions to deepen understanding

-Make connections to their own experiences

-Summarize chapters and key events

-Infer meaning from character actions and dialogue

By exploring the adventures of Charlie Bucket and the other golden ticket winners, students are learning to think critically and read actively—skills that will support them across all subject areas.

Writing

This week in writing, Year 4 students are learning all about simple, compound, and complex sentences!

A simple sentence has just one idea. Example: The dog barked.

A compound sentence joins two ideas with a word like and, but, or or. Example: The dog barked and the cat ran away.

A complex sentence has one main idea and one extra part that adds more detail. Example: Because the dog saw a squirrel, it barked.

Through reading and writing exercises, students are learning how to recognize and use these sentence types to improve their writing clarity and style.

Maths

Our Year 4 mathematicians have been reviewing their skills on telling time. They have been practicing telling time on analog clocks. (3 o’clock. 5:15 p.m, 9:00 a.m. etc). They have also been focusing on addition and the different strategies we can use to solve problems. Rather than focusing on just one method, students learned multiple ways to add, helping them become more flexible, accurate, and efficient thinkers. There are many strategies like vertical addition and split strategy. We have been practicing solving word problems with our strategies

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry, our Year 4 students are diving into Earth Science, with a focus on exploring the sun, moon, and stars. We’ve kicked off our learning journey by focusing on the sun. The students have shared their existing knowledge, posed thoughtful questions, and conducted research to explore their curiosities. Through reading, discussion, and investigation, they’ve discovered the vital role the Sun plays in sustaining life on Earth and its importance to humans.

Social and Emotional Learning

In SEL this week, our students have been learning about the significance of ANZAC Day. Through meaningful discussions, they explored the importance of this special day and participated in activities such as creating a commemorative wreath and learning about the symbolism of the poppy and rosemary. Building on this reflection, students also began to explore their own personal strengths, considering how these qualities help shape who they are and how they can use them to better understand and celebrate themselves.
