Year 2 News

Reading
In Year 2 the students have been investigating the purpose of the text. They have been looking at a range of texts and deciding why the author wrote the text. The students have been identifying clues which help them decide if the text is to entertain, to persuade or to inform. They have been exploring fiction and non-fiction texts and discovering that most non-fiction texts are written to inform the reader as they include lots of factual information and are there to teach us about a range of topics.
“In reading we have been doing the purpose of the text and thinking why the author wrote the book. My favourite part was looking at books that were to inform.” - Indiana, 2C
“I enjoyed the purpose of the text because we got to learn why the author made the book.” - Lucy, 2C
“I got to share facts from the books that were to inform.” - Ivaan, 2C
Writing
In writing, our Year 2 students have been learning the art of persuasive writing—a fun and powerful way to express their opinions and convince others to see things from their point of view. The focus has been on building strong arguments, using persuasive language, and organising their ideas clearly to make their case effectively.
Students have explored a range of engaging topics such as “Dogs are better than cats,” “Summer is better than winter”, and “Weekends should be longer”. With a lot of excitement, each student chose a topic they felt strongly about and developed reasons and examples to support their opinion.
It’s been wonderful to see the creativity and confidence as students present their viewpoints with enthusiasm. They're learning how to consider different perspectives, choose words carefully to influence their audience, and structure their writing with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion.
Maths
This term the Year 2 students have started an exciting new maths topic, addition!
They are learning how to add numbers using strategies and materials. These include friends of 10 (pairs of numbers that make 10 (like 3 and 7, or 6 and 4), doubles (adding the same number to itself like 5 + 5), near doubles (using a double to help with sums like 5 + 6 or 7 + 8)
Students are using games, group work, and fun activities to practise these skills. These strategies help to build confidence with numbers.
Inquiry
This term, our students have launched into an exciting new inquiry topic—Earth’s Resources. They’ve begun by exploring the big question: What is Earth, and what do we already know about it? Students have been sharing their ideas, asking thoughtful questions, and making connections to their everyday experiences.
As we move through the unit, we’ll be looking closely at the natural resources our planet provides, such as water, soil, plants, minerals, and energy sources. Through hands-on activities, discussions, and investigations, students will develop a deeper understanding of how these resources support life on Earth and why it’s important to use them responsibly.
It’s exciting to see the curiosity and enthusiasm this topic is already sparking in the classroom.
Social and Emotional Learning
The Year 2 students have made a fantastic start to Term 2. They have been revisiting classroom expectations around how to raise their hand, use their manners, not talk on the floor, how to pack up at the end of the day, how to keep the classroom tidy and use our classroom resources respectfully. The students role played how to and how not to use the walkways, play on the playground and how to wait at the canteen.
Special Event
To start off Term 2, CPS hosted our annual Easter Bonnet Parade where students showcased their beautiful creations from over the holidays. The School was filled with colour and enthusiasm as the students paraded around the gym displaying their creativity and dedication to making such beautiful bonnets. A huge well done to everyone who took part and congratulations to all of the winners!
“I enjoyed watching my brother win the competition!” - Tiare, 2C
“I really liked it when I won the competition and got lots of chocolate!” - Guntas, 2C
“I liked watching everyone do two laps of the gym.” - Haydar, 2C
