Reading

The Foundation students started the term by reviewing some of the sounds they explored last term. They have been learning a new set of high frequency words and have been demonstrating great resilience during reading sessions! As students continue building their reading skills, they have been focusing on segmenting, blending and decoding. They have engaged in stories on reading eggs and with classroom library books.

Writing

During writing, students worked on improving their pencil grip and practised writing neatly on the lines. They were introduced to persuasive writing, focusing on the goal of convincing others to agree with their point of view. Students explored essential elements of persuasion, including presenting strong reasoning and expressing enthusiasm and confidence in their opinions. They had multiple opportunities to share their thoughts on various topics, supporting their opinions with clear and strong arguments to persuade their audience.

Maths

Foundation students have been busy exploring numbers by counting forward and backward. Using number lines and interactive number charts, students have been counting forward and backwards from any starting point between 0 to 10. All classes have been engaging with a giant number grid out on the playground! They played games such as hopping frogs and bean bag toss while counting. Whether they’re jumping up the grid or counting down like rockets, students have been demonstrating confidence in their numeracy skills.

Inquiry

In Inquiry, the Foundation students are looking at a new unit, Understanding Belonging. They discussed the importance of having a place of belonging by exploring a family of otters. In this story, students learned the different roles of the otters in the family, allowing us to build a better understanding of family structure. Students have been sharing who is part of their family and what they enjoy doing with their family members. The foundation students had a wonderful time sharing their family trees with their peers!

In Social and Emotional Learning, Foundation students explored the concept of positive coping strategies. They learned about the different types of communities they are part of, such as their school, home, and the wider public and what it means to be a member of each. Through these discussions, students developed a deeper understanding of how to manage challenges in a healthy and constructive way across various settings. They also discovered the power of positive self-talk, learning how it can boost their confidence and motivate them to face challenges without giving up.
