Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden 2025
Over the last fortnight, the students in 3/4M have been busy in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program, working in our original orchard next to the undercover area. Some wild weeds had taken over, so we got straight to work digging out their roots. We also used our big muscles to shovel mulch into our wheelbarrows and spread some much-needed mulch around the area.
We added more garlic cloves to the garlic bed and planted some chives in the wine barrel. With the leaves soon to fall from our deciduous fruit trees, we’re hoping they’ll be ready for a fruitful spring and summer season.
The kitchen has been buzzing with excitement each week, with record-breaking numbers of volunteers joining us both weeks. The students have loved having so many parents come along to see them in their cooking element—not to mention sharing the beautiful meals they’ve created together with their families and friends.
I would like to thank Sharu, Jeff, Wendy, Melinda, Lilly, Bill, Kirsty, Katie, Brent and Padma for helping us over the last few weeks. We have loved having you! Next week will be the last week with 3/4M before we start with 3/4D.
Arigatou!

Student Reflections:
Lannah: Today we made a main meal called stir fry. The people who were helping us were Jeff, Lilly and Brent. Lilly is my mum and she helped me the most. I bet it will taste so good.
Ethan D: In SAKG, I cut the salad and I made a vegan sausage roll. I used a roller and rolled the dough.
Oscar: Today I cut lots of carrots and capsicums. I basically cut them the whole time. I also packed away lots of stuff.
Matthew: Today we made the main meal. We cut capsicums and carrots. The helpers that worked with us were Lily, Jeff and Brent.
Marisol: Today we made some salad with Anabelle's dad. It was lots of fun. We had broccolini, mushroom, soy sauce and honey with a little bit of sweet taste. The helpers today were Lilly (Lannah’s Mum), Jeff (Anabelle’s Dad) and Kristy (Charlie's Mum). Naomi’s mum and Jeremy’s Dad were there too. But the only one who made my day the best was Mrs. Siegert!
Atticus: Today I was making the bread we needed to get the vanilla flavor, then some zucchini, then some eggs and some brown sugar. The helpers were Kirsty, Bill and Sharu .
Sienna: Today I made salad. The ingredients were onions, olives, tomatoes and this sour and sweet oil. Nikki Sensei was helping us make all of that and it was super fun. Nikki Sensei said that I had to try the sweet but sour oil. It tasted like sour watermelon essence. I asked Nikki Sensei about how to make it so the ingredients were oil, vinegar and sugar.
Olivia: Today for 3/4M they did cooking for sports day. This week they made zucchini, vegetarian sausage rolls, garlic dip and some salad. The parents also helped because if there were no adults I don't think kids are going to make anything. If you are an adult and you want to help your children make and eat delicious food.
Lannah: We would like to say thank you to all friends and family for helping the tomatoes make the vegetarian sausage rolls, the eggplant’s make the salad, the zucchini’s make the zucchini bread and the carrot’s make the carrot dip.
Aaliyah: Today is Week 5 of our program, sadly 2 more weeks! We made garlic dip, broccolini and mushroom salad, vegetarian sausage rolls and zucchini bread. I made the sausage rolls. Surprisingly I thought we were going to use vegan meat but no, we used pumpkin, carrots, garlic, tomatoes, eggs and chickpeas. I think that's all. The helpers in my group were my mum, Wendy, Lilly and Kristy. My mum’s name is Melinda or Mel. We put all the ingredients in a bowl and mixed it with our hands! Then we put them on the bread looking things and rolled them! Lannah and I put the egg yolk on top of the rolls and after we did that her mum put it in the oven to cook for 25-30 minutes. Then Mrs Marshall came and picked us up except for the Carrot group.
Lorenzo: Today we made zucchini bread with Sharu and Bill. Nikki Sensei’s group made garlic dip, Jeff's group made the salad and Kirsty, Lily , Wendy and Melinda.
Naomi: Today is week 5 of our Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Gardening Program. We made garlic dip, broccolini and mushroom salad, vegetarian sausage rolls and zucchini bread. The food I am most excited about is the vegetarian sausage rolls and the salad. My group used our hands to mix in the ingredients and it was so soft and mushy. Today the carrot group prepared the table for us to eat.
Charlie: I very enjoyed cooking. My mum got to come as well. It was also very enjoyable and I loved it so much. I would like to thank the other people who came. Thank you!
Alexi: Today me and my group made zucchini bread with Sharu and Bill. Other groups made vegetarian sausage rolls, garlic bread and broccoli mushroom salad.
Oscar: Today we made the salad. I cut loads of mushrooms and broccoli. In gardening, I planted a plant and also watered a lot of plants.
