Kitchen Garden

Another busy fortnight in the garden as we wind down in preparation for the end of term this week. Again, thank you to the Year 6’s who came down during the second week of NAPLAN testing and to all the other students who helped in the garden during recess and lunchtime.  Unfortunately the snow peas we planted last week did not survive the snails, and even the large carrots have had their leaves removed by something tiny and slimy! You might have noticed a third worm farm has appeared – thank you Cormack family for the donation; LA12 had fun setting it up.

Thank you families who attended this term’s working bee. It was a perfect day for staining the timber planters and starting to prime the wall for a mural that will be painted by Wurundjeri artist Alex Kerr and the students later this year. The storm water drain was unblocked and the mulch from it placed around the pear tree.

The compost bins are all full and “cooking”, and the coffee grinds we’ve been adding will become less acidic over the next six weeks. Thank you, colleagues, for your contributions and also the team at Bedggood & Co café in East Melbourne.

Thank you to everyone who left eggshells this fortnight; they’ve all been ground up and put out to try to save our seedlings. It’s been a real struggle to stop the snails eating our term 2 produce! Please keep the eggshell donations coming: rinsed to prevent mould, and placed near the student sinks would be great.

Thank you too to the East Melbourne Community Garden members for the donation of rhubarb which has been frozen ready for use in term 2. Yum!

We hope everyone has a great holiday break & we look forward to having students back in Kitchen Garden for lots of fun in term 2.
