Remembering Lionsville by Bronwyn Bancroft

This year all the students have begun the term by studying contemporary Aboriginal artists. Grades 1 – 2 investigated the art of Bronwyn Bancroft.
Bancroft is a Bundjalung woman who is a contemporary artist known for her vibrant, high-key palette and intricate, often stained-glass-like patterns that blend traditional motifs with modern aesthetics. Her work explores deep connections to Country, family history, and political themes, featuring bold, layered compositions. Her contribution to Aboriginal children’s literature has been immense and has included the publication of 50 books.

Inspired by her book ‘Remembering Lionsville’, the students first sketched a landscape drawing, including hills, trees and mountains. We then looked at her book ‘Colours of Australia’ and painted our landscapes with bright liquid water colours. Finally, inspired by ‘Patterns of Australia’ the students added patterns to the landscape with paint pens.
