Learning Update

From Mr Collins 2-6
Well, NAPLAN is over. A big congratulations to the senior room for the way they composed themselves through the NAPLAN period. In the end, it was rather smooth sailing for us, despite the technical issues most schools were having. At Raywood Primary we are a team, so despite the Grade 4 and 6 students not actually needing to complete NAPLAN, they completed practice assessments anyway. Great job kids!
Literacy
It has all been about mixing up expository and narrative texts in our room. The kids have gotten quite good at planning and then beginning their drafts straight away. This week the kids started writing a narrative for the purpose of showing it at the parent teacher conferences next week.
Numeracy
With NAPLAN taking up so much of our time, we have slowed down some of our mathematics work over the last fortnight. Our main focus however has been on the connection between addition and subtraction, and calculating area. The kids really enjoyed a dice game involving length, width and area.
Young Leaders' Convention 2026
On Wednesday, Skylar, Isabell, Mrs Lehre, and I journeyed to Melbourne for the 2026 Young Leaders' Convention at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre. What an unreal experience for all of us to be part of. Feedback from the kids was that they enjoyed the guest speaker, Maddy Prespakis most.
The Resilience Project
This week's focus in TRP has been on empathy. We delved into the meaning of empathy, what it looks like and why it is important. The kids were asked to choose the 5 most important aspects to empathy that they consistently follow, and then one they could improve at.
From Ms Lehre P-2
Week 7 and 8 have been full of fun and activity! Swimming lessons every Wednesday are keeping us active, along with our training for Cross Country.
In the Little Room during English, we have been learning about verbs and how they are “doing words” — if you can act it out, it’s probably a verb! Students have also been working hard on correct letter formation in their handwriting books and have been challenged to extend their writing. We even completed a practice NAPLAN-style writing task using the same stimulus as the senior students — I have been incredibly impressed with everyone’s effort.
In Maths, we have begun exploring shapes and learnt that a vertex is a corner. We will continue to work on our number sense and number formation.
I’ll be sharing some photos of our recent activities, including our entry in the Raywood Fire Brigade logo competition, the fantastic mural Lukas created with the students, and our life skills session making toasted ham and cheese sandwiches.
