Mental Health in Primary Schools

Mental Health in Primary Schools Program is an exciting initiative that is part of a national effort to support positive mental health for all primary school students.
Last week Michael Schinck and Jill Hannan and I attended training and induction sessions to deepen our understanding of the program and how best to apply it across our school community at SJV.
This Victorian Department of Education program is designed to strengthen how schools support the mental health and wellbeing of students. Through this training, staff are learning practical strategies that support Tier 1 wellbeing approaches for all students, including building strong classroom relationships, explicitly teaching social and emotional skills, and creating safe, inclusive learning environments. These whole-school practices help students develop resilience, emotional regulation, and positive ways to manage challenges. By embedding these strategies into everyday classroom routines and school culture, the MHIPS initiative helps ensure every student feels supported, connected, and ready to learn.
We look forward to sharing more as the training continues across the year and informs our whole school approach to mental health and wellbeing.
