Angles Everywhere! What Are Our Year 6 Students Learning?

Mathematics Focus: Angles – Year 6 

Have you ever noticed how many angles there are in the world around us? From the hands of a clock and the corners of buildings to road signs, roof structures and sporting fields, angles are everywhere!

This term, our Year 6 students have been developing their understanding of angles and learning how mathematicians use angle relationships to solve problems.

Year 6: Building strong foundations

In Year 6, students have learnt to recognise, estimate, measure and classify angles. They have developed an understanding that angles can be described by their size and measured in degrees.

Students worked with:

• Acute angles – less than 90°

• Right angles – exactly 90°

• Obtuse angles – greater than 90° but less than 180°

• Straight angles – exactly 180°

• Reflex angles – greater than 180° but less than 360°

• A full revolution – exactly 360°

   

Students also investigated important relationships between angles. For example, they discovered that angles on a straight line add to 180°, angles around a point add to 360°, and vertically opposite angles are equal.
