Inquiry in Year Four

The Inquiry Investigations unit for Term Three is ‘I am an Engineer’, with the big question for the Year Four cohort being ‘Why do we need engineers?’. 

Inspired by our class novel, Storm Boy, students have explored what it means to problem solve like an engineer when faced with the task of building a shelter for a pelican. Students worked as groups within set parameters to design and create a structure to protect their pelican from the elements. 

Students had the opportunity to test their first prototype against ‘wind’ and reflect on the materials used before making improvements. They discussed the importance of using sustainable, natural resources. After having time to redesign and improve upon their first prototype, the students then tested their second prototype against ‘wind’ and ‘rain’.

This task proved to be a valuable learning experience for the students as they reflected upon the challenges and successes of following the design process.

Next Steps: Students will be developing their research skills to further understand the different types of Engineering. They will then work in teams to design a safe, sustainable and successful island community for people to live in.
