Auslan

Grade 1 and 2

This week, students will watch the Auslan Storybooks version of The Very Cranky Bear. Students will focus on recognising animals and showing emotions using facial expression, gesture and body movement. They will respond to the story through miming and drawing, learning how important non-manual features (facial expression and body language) are in Auslan communication.

Grade 3 and 4

This week in Auslan, our Year 3 and 4 students will watch the Auslan Storybooks version of The Wrong Book. Students will focus on identifying repeated signs and high-frequency phrases in the story, and discuss how these translate to English. They will explore how facial expression and other non-manual features add meaning in storytelling, and notice how changes in expression can influence interpretation and understanding.

Grade 5 and 6

This week in Auslan, our Year 6 students will finalise their step-by-step instructions they planned and rehearsed last week. Using list buoys, students will clearly explain how to complete a task while maintaining appropriate facial expression and signing clarity. They will then present to their classmates, building their confidence and expressive skills in the process.

Visual Arts

Prep students will be drawing a picture of their Dad for Father’s Day coming up. They will use chalk pastels on black paper and use techniques of smudging and blending to create the portrait.

Grade 1 students will be drawing a detailed picture of their Dad, including things that he enjoys doing. They will use sharpie to create their drawing before adding watercolour next week.

Grade 2 students will be under-glazing their coil pot for their Dad for Father’s Day. They will focus on colour choice and applying two layers of under-glaze for complete coverage.

Grade 3/4 students will be under-glazing their pinch pot monster and adding colour and personality to their designs. They will also be creating a tag to attach to their Father’s Day gift (bbq sauce made in SAKG!).

Grade 5/6 students will begin a new unit focussing on the artists Picasso and Cantrell. They will look at the cubist movement and begin to put together a colourful and abstract portrait of their Dads.

🌱 STEM & National Science Week

This week in STEM, all students will be celebrating National Science Week through a hands-on investigation into native seed bombs, exploring the theme “Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All.”

Grade 1/2 will connect their learning to the needs of living things

Grade 3/4 will explore the differences between native and introduced species

Grade 5/6 students will investigate plant adaptations and extreme weather, including how some Australian native plants use smoke as a signal to help trigger seed germination after bushfires.

Through making and planting our seed bombs, students will discover how science helps us understand, protect and nurture the natural world around us.

Performing Arts

Preps are learning the music and lyrics to their songs in Beauty and the Beast Jr., developing their confidence in singing and performing together. They are also exploring stories and characters through pirate role play, using their voices, movement and imagination to take on different roles and bring ideas to life.

Grade 1 and 2 are learning the music and lyrics to their songs in Beauty and the Beast Jr. As they become more familiar with the songs, students are exploring how singing, movement and expression can communicate character, mood and help tell a story.

Grade 3 and 4 are developing stories for their puppets to perform. Students are creating characters and exploring how voice, movement and focus can communicate their ideas as they plan, rehearse and refine short puppet performances.

Grade 5 and 6 are using the puppets they have made or are making in Art to create a video performance for their current or future buddy. Working in pairs, students are developing characters and using voice, movement, focus and puppetry techniques to plan, rehearse and perform for a younger audience.
