AATIS Update – new apprenticeships website
The Australian Apprenticeships and Traineeships Information Service (AATIS) is in the process of transitioning information provision to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR), prior to closure in December 2023.Information and resources on AAPathways are being transitioned to a new website run by the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations (DEWR).The new website is now available at Apprenticeships.gov.au

Baw Baw Shire Community Consultation on the draft Youth Strategy
Following input, ideas and feedback earlier in the year, Baw Baw Shire has developed a draft Youth Strategy that aims to improve the experiences of young people living, working in and visiting Baw Baw Shire, and now we want to hear what you think of it! Community Consultation for the draft Youth Strategy is open from 8 November until 15 December 2023. Now is your chance to have a say.

Careers in the Disability and Care Workforce
Unfortunately, many people don’t associate working in the disability sector with a wide and dynamic range of roles. The Care Careers website contains excellent information for those looking to work in the sector.

- This industry is recession proof and is expected to experience strong job growth
- There are currently 70 000 people employed in disability in Australia, and this needs to double to meet demand.

- There are a wide range of roles in the disability sector

Often the optometrist is first point of contact for people and they can make referrals to orthoptists.
They are health care professionals who can diagnose eye diseases, detect changes in the visual system and prescribe corrective lenses. Fee-Free TAFE set to continue in 2024
With more than half of the 2023 Skills Priority List top 20 occupations in demand nationally having direct VET pathways it’s never been a better time to look at skilling up or changing careers with the government funding an additional 300,000 Fee-Free TAFE and VET places from January next year.
There are some great options available to our school leavers.

Bardie is a talented carpenter who originally started out her career journey studying a Bachelor of Fine Art, but now she spends her days on work sites building people’s homes.
Jamie is a determined third-year apprentice on his way to becoming a patisserie chef. His ADHD can make it difficult for him to focus, but he’s a wonderfully skilled chef who uses maths and chemistry every day to create beautifully delicate desserts and cakes.
Vinuri is a dedicated researcher/scientist on a mission to learn more about the impacts of plastic pollution on our oceans so she can educate others about what they can do to help minimise the harm.

Low Income Health Care Card for School Leavers
Once you have finished school you are no longer a student and you may be eligible for a Low Income Health Care Card.
This card gives access to a range of benefits, not only on some health care items but also on a range of other goods and services if you are on a low income. In particular, some TAFE and other short courses may offer discounts for cardholders.
You may also be eligible for public transport concessions (note that if you are studying interstate you are not eligible for public transport concessions in Victoria).
Eligibility for a Low Income Health Care Card is based on YOUR income over the previous 8 weeks before applying. As long as your income is less than $5,616 over that period (or $702 per week) you are eligible to apply. You will be eligible to keep the Low Income Health Care Card as long as your income does not exceed $7,020 (or $877 per week) in any 8 week period prior to renewing your card.
It is highly recommended that all eligible graduating Year 12 students consider applying for this card once the exams are over.

VCAA Student Achievement Profile
Commencing this year, the Student Achievement Profile will show all that a student has achieved – not just their final academic results or completed qualifications.
A Student Achievement Profile summary will be issued in 2023 for senior secondary students leaving school without a qualification in 2023 and 2024. It will present a holistic summary of a student’s achievements captured during their senior secondary education and complement the existing Statement of Results.
