What a busy few weeks we have had in the Health & Physical Education Curriculum!

Curriculum Update

Foundation:

Over past few weeks, the Foundation Students concluded their unit on throwing and catching via combining their learned skills with ultimate Frisbee to a house point challenge. Students were required to move around to different stations where they were either tasked with throwing the frisbee to a set target or having to catch it from a teammate. To watch how far the students had come from lesson one to now was very impressive.

After concluding the throwing and catching unit the students participated in a lesson which involved a Tabloid Relay. The purpose of this session was to allow the students to apply a number of learned Fundamental Movement/Motor Skills (bouncing, balancing, dribbling by foot) using a variety of equipment e.g. Tennis Racquet & ball, Basketball, Football, Soccer ball. Each student had the opportunity to use each but of equipment to showcase their skills. I was super impressed and the level of improvement from when this was done back in Term Two.

Our last lesson focused on some team collaboration skills using the parachute. The students had to move the parachute in sync to bounce the rubber chickens off or hold it up for long enough for two students to run underneath and swap spots.

The Level 2 students concluded their throwing and catching unit with a game of Ultimate Frisbee whereby 2A played against 2B in a full-scale match on the oval. It was impressive to watch the students apply their learned skills into a real style match and the level of team collaboration that was on display.

Year Three/Four:

Over the past few weeks, the Level 3-4 students have commenced their unit involving the sport Softball. An accredited coach through the Sporting Schools Program has been engaged to deliver the program.

The students have had the opportunity to practise the fundamental skills involved with the game such as, striking, throwing, catching and fielding. These skills were taught through group-based activities and mini challenges which were set by the coach. These skills are all necessary before the students can progress to match-play. It was great to watch the students level of confidence grow throughout the session.

During the second lesson the students moved into playing a game of softball. The students must be commended for their striking skills during the game. It was so impressive to watch their swing timing and the contact they made with a pitched ball.

Mountain Biking Elective

Our select 3-6 students have continued on with their Mountain Bike elective with the focus being cornering and gear changing. To enact both of these skills the students rode around a set course which had both up and down hill sections. The purpose of these sections was to allow the students to develop the understanding around how changing gears is very important when riding. It was great to see their confidence grow throughout the session.

During the second lesson the students moved into playing a game of softball. The students must be commended for their striking skills during the game. It was so impressive to watch their swing timing and the contact they made with a pitched ball.

Primary School Volleyball Cup

On Tuesday 24th October, fifty of our Level 56 students represented our school at the Primary School Volleyball Cup. There were schools present from across the Eastern Metropolitan area. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the day and gain not only exposure to the sport but also enhanced their level of skill and teamwork. We had two of our seven teams place in the top three in their respective groups, an amazing effort.
