English OVERVIEW - Term FOUR
In English this term, students have been participating a range activities which highlight their learnt skills is Reading, Writing and Speaking and Listening.
READING:
This term in 5/6 we have begun Book Club during Reading sessions. At the start of the term students in all classes were placed in a Book Club group and were given a novel that they would read as a group. Each week student's look at a different comprehension strategy and apply that strategy to their Book Club sessions. Students have done a fantastic job in their Book Club groups; sharing thoughts, ideas, opinions, reading aloud to their group and also agreeing each week to where they will read up to. It has been great to see all students enjoying their Book Club book and discussing the novel with their group.
WRITING:
Writing in Term Four has been based around the students being able to showcase all that they have learnt throughout the year. Students are going to complete seven pieces of writing within eight weeks, all linked to imaginative, informative and persuasive text types.
Our Year Six students are completing pieces of writing linked to each year of their Primary School experience, coming together to develop their Reflections scrapbook. To add to this, students used learnt scrapbooking skills to display their writing and any photos that they have want to share.
Our Year Five students have completed the exact same writing text types but with a focus on different topics. Some were given to them (such as: favourite holiday, pet and weather event) and some topics they had free choice.
All students are working extremely consistently through the term, producing a brainstorm, planning, drafting, editing and publishing their writing in one week.
SPEAKING & LISTENING:
During the term, our Speaking and Listening domain has been included within our Book Club sessions, where students have been reading out loud, focusing on fluency, pace and expression. Students have been asking question linked to the book and group discussions have taken place to update students knowledge.
REFLECTIONS SCRAPBOOKS
Our Year Six students have been working hard to present their reflective writing pieces into their Reflections Scrapbooks, in many pleasing ways. It has been rewarding as teachers to see different presentation skills being used, showcasing the students years at primary school. We still have two more timetabled scrapbooking sessions, so if you have any more photos to send in, can this be done ASAP.
If any parent would like to come to school to help our students, please sign in at the front office (present WWC to Janette), everyone is welcome.
Sessions will follow the below times:
S4 - Friday 17th November - 11.00am - 12.30pm
Friday 24th November - CURRICULUM DAY
S5 - Friday 1st December - 11.00am - 12.30pm
Friday 8th December - Year 5/6 CELEBRATION DAY
BUDDIES
With our Buddy sessions moved back to a Friday, it has been a nice way to end the week talking, working, playing and eating lunch with our Foundation friends. As done so through the year, our Year Five students are delivering the activities for the day, this has seen them reading a picture story book to the whole group and explain the interactive activity that matches it. Last week Mitch and Noah A completed this activity, well done on a great delivery.
It is always pleasing to see how our Year Five students interact with the Foundation students. We are perfect role models to the younger students and they love spending time with us.
End of Year Celebration.
On Friday 8th of December, all Year Five/Six students will participate in our End of Year Celebration. This day consists of viewing Trolls at Boronia Metro cinema, having a sausage sizzles at school and inside/outside games in the afternoon.
We would like to acknowledge the Butchers Club (Ferntree Plaza) and Upwey Village Bakery who have donated all the sausages and bread for our BBQ.
GRADUATION
SAVE THE DATE: THURSDAY 14th DECEMBER, 2023.
During this week, Year Six parents have received a Compass Event regarding our Graduation evening. This outlines important times for arrival and pick up, ceremony times, dinner information and disco information. Please action this event as soon as possible, to assist in the smooth organisation of the evening.
If any parent would still like to assist in the decorating of the school gym for the ceremony and disco, please make contact with your class teacher and they will swiftly pass your name over.
The more parents helping, the smoother it flows and the more fun we all have together.
