Around the College

Remembrance Day

Today, Friday 10 November, we observed Remembrance Day which occurs tomorrow. In a special ceremony under and around our ANZAC Pavillion, staff and students observed a time when Australia and other nations around the world pause to reflect and remember those people who have died in wars and to honour their service and sacrifice.  We were fortunate to have the staff and cadets of the 604 Squadron, Hampstead Barracks, Australian Air Force Cadets play a special role in the service, with our own Jesse Isaac (School Captain) leading the command to Present Arms.

The origins of Remembrance Day go back to November 11 in1918, when at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, the guns fell silent on the Western Front in Europe ending World War I.

This year marks a significant military anniversary. Fifty years ago this year, Australia formally ended its involvement in the Vietnam War. This war was one of the longest conflicts of the 20th century. From 1962 to 1973, more than 60,000 Australians served in this conflict. They were part of an allied force led by the United States of America. Australians fought alongside South Vietnamese Government troops and more than 500 Australian troops died with more than 3000 Australians wounded.

More than 100,000 Australians have made the ultimate sacrifice in conflicts of the past 100 years to help preserve our freedom. Today we honour them.

They shall not grow old as that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them, or the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, we will remember them.

This trip is being offered to all students who will be in Years 9 -11 in 2024, and has been scheduled for the October school holidays. Faith vs Endeavour College Chess Tournament

Yesterday students from Faith Lutheran College came to Endeavour for the 2nd round of our intercollegiate chess tournament. There were seven participants from Faith and nine participants from Endeavour.

To spice things up a bit Mrs Hutton’s Year 11 Food and Hospitality class catered for the event, providing an epic spread of delicious canapes and other finger foods. The Chess Club members from both schools eagerly devoured the beautifully presented snacks and entrée style items.

After 7 rounds of chess Endeavour College won the overall tournament with a total of 39.5 wins against Faith’s score of 15.5. But what was even better than winning the tournament was seeing these young chess players enjoying each other’s company as they battled it on the boards.

There were also 4 individual prize winners as follows:

Most wins in the tournament: Flynn Schleicher (from Faith) with 7 wins.

Best comeback: Aiden Young (from Endeavour) who won in the last seconds of an epic game.

The quickest checkmate: Owen Purczel (from Endeavour) who checkmated his opponent twice in just 3 moves.

The biggest blunder: Thomas White (from Faith) who lost his queen at a critical moment.

Special thanks to Mrs Hutton’s Food and Hospitality team for catering on the day. It really was amazing!

And thanks to Mark Slaven from Faith for bringing his enthusiastic team from Tanunda!

Endeavour students who participated in the tournament were:

Blake Eckert, Seth Garritt, Hasib Isaac, Kadin Jamieson, Owen Meinel, Owen Pham, Owen Purczel, Aidan Simmons, and Aiden Young.
