Year One

Hello, Year One Families,

Term 4 is now in full swing! We have entered our final Unit of Inquiry and working towards completing our final assessments for the year!

Reading:

The students have been working on analysing non-fiction text features to support their understanding of this text type. They have also been developing their understanding of the structural choices authors make when creating texts.

Writing:

The students have continued to develop their understanding of information reports. This week, students have finished off their information report posters about the Sun. They have also completed a writing assessment which involved writing a story based on a picture prompt.

Maths:

Year One students have continued to investigate 2D & 3D shapes this week. Students have consolidated their knowledge of 2D shapes and begun to develop an understanding of 3D objects. Students were asked to classify shapes and objects based on common features and were exposed to common 3D objects and their names, such as cylinders, cubes, and pyramids.

Inquiry

Year One students spent this week inquiring into the moon and its relationship to both the Earth and the Sun. Students discovered that the moon has eight phases and had the opportunity to sort these phases by appearance and name. Students were then asked to create their own visual representation of the moon phases using either Play-Doh or paper. Students are developing the understanding that the appearance of the moon is affected by its position in relation to both the Earth and the Sun.

Reminders:

  • As it is Term 4, students must wear hats outdoors, or remain in designated shade areas.
  • Students must bring water bottles and refill them during breaks to stay hydrated.
  • Please do not wait on the classroom decks after school. Many classes are dismissed from the decking area and it is difficult for students to move about freely when parents are standing on the decks. Please wait on the concrete walkway for your child at dismissal time.
  • The doors open at 8:20 am and students are strongly encouraged to arrive at school on time. Students arriving at the classroom after 8:30 am must collect a late pass from the front office.
  • If students are absent from school, parents must log their reasons on Xuno.
  • Year One swimming will be held in Weeks 7-9. Please check your email for communications from your child's classroom teacher with further details.

Kind Regards,

The Year One Team
