Year Five

Dear Year Five Families,

The students have been working hard in their learning as we start our final Unit of Inquiry. Term 4 is flying by and we are nearing closer to our exciting events, including our School Carnival and Christmas Carols.

READING

In Reading, our students have begun an investigation into the renowned picture book author, Margaret Wild. Margaret Wild is famous for her books such as Fox, There's a Sea In My Bedroom, and Old Pig. Using her books, we've been identifying and discussing the themes of the text and analysing her language. She's embedded profound messages throughout her writing, and we hope the students learn and respect her writing. They're welcome to read through her texts in their own time, found on the Year 5 reading schoolbox page.

WRITING

In Writing, our students have begun to explore their creative outlets through poetry writing. We've explored haikus and limericks so far, and will continue to explore and adopt the creative techniques that many authors use in their poetry. We hope the students find a place for them to express themselves through language, as many renowned authors have found.

MATHS

In Mathematics, we have begun a unit of angles and geometric reasoning. The students have begun by using language to describe angles, using degrees as the formal unit of measurement, and using a protractor to identify the angle. Our next steps will be exploring different kinds of shapes, finding the total degrees of these shapes, and applying our new knowledge to real-world applications.

INQUIRY

Throughout Inquiry, our students have begun an investigation into the Arts and how humans express themselves through art. We will be learning about social issues and how art reflects and challenges the human condition. We are observing and analysing many various art forms, including paintings, music, live performances, and sketching.

Term Four Reminders:

As we are in the final term of the year, there are many things to remember:

  • Hats - As per the department policy, hats must be worn in term four. If students do not have a hat, they must go to the shaded eating area during recess and lunch. It is important that students have the Saltwater hat, as it is likely that PE class may be held outside. All caps are not allowed for primary students.
  • MacBooks - MacBooks are required at school every day fully charged as per the Digital Use Agreement from the beginning of the year.
  • School Carnival- November 18th from 9am-4pm
  • Christmas Carols - In term four, we have Christmas Carols. 5A, 5C, and 5E will be performing 12 Days of Christmas by Pentatonix, and 5B and 5D will be performing Deck the Halls by Love to Sing. More information about Christmas Carols will be available at a later date. If you do not want your children to take part, please email their classroom teacher.
  • Early Holidays - We understand that some families will be going away early for the Christmas holidays. If you have a planned holiday, please let your child/ren's classroom teacher know as well as the office.
  • End of Year Celebration - Adventure Park, Monday 4th December

Kind regards,

Year Five Teachers
