Year Four

Dear Year Four families,

Unit of Inquiry

In Unit of Inquiry 6 ‘How the World Works’ students are learning about ‘How changes to Earth’s surface happen quickly and slowly overtime.’ They are investigating to understand the term scientific method and it’s parts to conduct an experiment. When involved in an experiment students created a hypothesis, followed the steps of the scientific method to record their observations and finally analysed their observations. Year Four students completed a  Soil Erosion experiment and observed the wearing away of dirt and soil by water. They carefully observed the process involving ‘Cause and Effect’ on Earth’s surface.

Coding

Year Four students were engaged in the robotics and coding class where they were given an opportunity to learn about the 'control flow.' Students were exposed to vocabulary such as, computer programs, control flow and animation.

They used iPads using Sphero Edu App and were involved in a computer program to run the multicolour lights sequence and repeated them with a loop. In another activity Year Four students learned how to code the 8x8 LED array to create an animation on the Sphero Bolt. They ran a sequence of pictures on the LED array, showing each for a short time, giving the illusion of a moving picture.

Camp

185 students had a successful experience on camp. It was met with much enthusiasm and excitement upon arrival on the first day. Students were welcomed by the friendly Arrabri Lodge staff with a brief orientation of the camp before commencing their activities.  Many were met with challenges such as trying the giant swing, having a go at the flying fox and being able to roll back up their sleeping bags on the last day.

Students participated in other activities such as mini golf, archery, sensory trails, rock climbing, orienteering, Gaga ball and the ropes course.

Breakfast and dinner meals were supported by our students by setting the tables and managing clean up. This provided responsibilities and skills that they can use at home.

Evenings were spent with a movie night watching the film 'Ice Age', bush dancing, mini olympics, night walks and marshmallow roasting by the fire.

With a final goodbye by the staff and students spent their last day with a ride on Puffing Billy. Starting at the Belgrave station, students travelled for an hour arriving at Lakeside to end with a picnic lunch by Emerald Lake.

We want to express our heartfelt gratitude to our parent volunteers who supported our students on camp. Your time, effort, and commitment made a significant difference and is much appreciated by our teachers and students.
