Literacy - At Home

Over the past few years, we have been thoughtfully developing our literacy program. Research shows that all children benefit from a balance of books they can read independently and high-quality, authentic texts.

Authentic texts are rich, meaningful picture books that often explore ideas beyond children’s everyday experiences or those typically found in books for young readers. These texts are ideal for shared reading at home, providing valuable opportunities for discussion. Through this, children develop their oral language, vocabulary, conceptual understanding, and their own voice as writers, while also fostering a genuine love of reading. Authentic texts are not only written for young children but are enjoyed by readers of all ages.

While students in Foundation to Year 2 have been taking home decodable texts to build accuracy and fluency in reading, we have recently introduced authentic texts into the take-home reading program. These books are accompanied by guiding questions to support meaningful conversations at home. Thank you for supporting the process by returning your child’s take home books each week.

We are incredibly proud of our young readers and appreciate the important role families play in supporting the development of their literacy skills and love of reading.
