What's Happening in the Art Room?

We’ve been in full swing in the Art Room having fun, creating and experimenting!
The Preps have been all about colour - primary colours and rainbow order. They have created some beautiful mixed media rainbows and even learnt a funky song to help them remember the correct order. In the library they have been reading Twig by Aura Parker, so what better thing to do than grab some sticks from the garden and make their own stick insects - complete with a patterned calico scarf!
The Year 1/2 students have been delving into colourful pieces too! They have looked at the vibrant work of Jessi Raulet and created some beautiful hearts using paint sticks and markers. They also discussed abstract art and looked at some famous pieces by Wassily Kandinsky. Taking inspiration from Kandinsky they created their own geometric paper collages.
Our Year 3/4 students have been learning about value and how different values can give the illusion of light and shadow in our artworks. They looked at the beautiful landscape paintings from Canadian artist Lawren Harris and trialled mixing tints and shades to create their own picture of a mountain range. Then our lessons turned to experimentation as the students trailed different methods for monoprinting. It was great to see them trying different processes, sharing ideas and adapting their methods to create different effects. They had a blast!
The Year 5/6 students have looked at street art and discussed the differences between street art and graffiti. They took inspiration from both to create an identity wall which featured their stylized name on a printed brick wall background. After reading the book ‘Fire’ by Jackie French and looking closely at the illustration by Bruce Whatley, the students sketched out a scene depicting the effect of a bushfire. They used Whatley’s idea of watercolour paints to capture the movement of fire. It was so impressive to see the students experimenting with different methods and effects using their watercolours. They were very proud of their finished pieces, as they should be!
