Performing Arts

Why we love the Performing Arts at BEPS!
At Burwood East Primary School, the Performing Arts are highly valued as an important part of every child’s learning journey. We believe that music, drama and dance provide students with meaningful opportunities to express themselves creatively, build confidence and connect with others in positive and engaging ways. Students have opportunities to immerse themselves in the Performing Arts through weekly specialist lessons, a variety of lunchtime clubs and ensembles, as well as individual onsite tuition through our Instrumental Music Program.
Research highlighted by the Victorian Department of Education demonstrates the many benefits of participation in the Performing Arts for children’s learning and development. Studies by Gillespie and Glider found that music experiences can strengthen communication and language skills, particularly through singing, rhythm, movement and listening activities. Music also supports memory, concentration and emotional expression.
Dance and movement experiences also play an important role in children’s development. Research by Giguere and Lorenzo-Lasa suggests that dance activities can support language development, social interaction, coordination and body awareness. Through movement, children learn to communicate ideas, emotions and stories in creative ways.
Drama experiences such as role-play, storytelling, puppetry and improvisation encourage imagination, empathy, collaboration and problem-solving. Researchers including Mages and Smith have identified strong links between drama activities and the development of oral language, creativity and confidence.
Whether students are learning an instrument, performing on stage, participating in a lunchtime club or creating movement in class, the Performing Arts provide joyful opportunities for every child to grow, create and shine.
