Year 6 English

Reading and Comprehension
Students have been exploring the novel Once by Morris Gleitzman. Through shared reading and class discussions, they are building their understanding of key events, characters, and themes. A strong focus has been placed on both literal and inferential comprehension, encouraging students to think deeply about the author’s message and support their ideas with evidence from the text.
Writing
Students are developing their writing skills through an information report about Poland. They have been learning how to plan and write effective introductions and body paragraphs, using clear topic sentences and organised ideas. There is also a focus on improving sentence structure through the use of techniques such as relative clauses and appositives.
Language and Word Study
Students are strengthening their vocabulary and spelling through targeted word study, including a focus on specific sound patterns and word origins. These skills are applied in both their reading and writing tasks.
Fluency and Expression
Students are continuing to build their reading fluency through regular practice and are engaging in short writing activities. These tasks support students in developing confidence and expression in both their reading and writing.
