Understanding Racism and Building Respectful Communities

This term, as part of our Wellbeing lessons, students have been focusing on exploring the concept of racism and how we can actively build a safe, respectful, and inclusive school community. Students have been engaging in age-appropriate discussions and activities using resources from Racism No Way, an Australian program that supports schools in teaching about racism and promoting respect for diversity.

Through these lessons, students are learning to:

  • Recognise what racism can look like in everyday situations
  • Understand the impact of words and actions on others
  • Develop strategies for being an upstander and showing respect
  • Celebrate differences and value inclusion within our community

We encourage families to continue this important learning at home by having open conversations with your child about respect, fairness, and how we can all contribute to an inclusive community. You might like to ask questions such as:

  • What does it mean to treat others fairly and respectfully?
  • What can we do if we see someone being treated unkindly?
  • How can we make sure everyone feels included at school and in the community?

These conversations help reinforce the messages being taught at school and support children in developing empathy, understanding, and strong social awareness.

Thank you for your ongoing support in working together to build a respectful and inclusive school environment for all students.
