Dear Parents,

The school holiday’s can sometimes be a rollercoaster for families.  We are excited to spend precious one on one time with our children and it is a time is for resting.  However, some times the change in routine can leave kids feeling overwhelmed, bored, or irritable.

Today, we will look at how we can help our kids through the holidays.  We can look at the holidays as a time to relax a little. No longer do we have to run out the door for school drop off or pick up, making sure lunch boxes are packed. But after a little while, children get “bored” and may start to demonstrate emotions that can be challenging.

The zones of regulation are an easy way to “check-in” and see how our students are going and if something is not right how to quickly correct it.  The colour represent a feeling of what you may be seeing and what that actually means and some ideas for you.

Here are some “non screen time” activities to help keep them in the green zone.

  • Backyard treasure hunt
  • Build a blanket fort
  • Bake with an adult
  • Challenge time! Board game, soccer game…
  • Crafts
  • Go spot some wildlife, make sure you take a notepad so you can take notes and tell everyone about it afterwards!
  • Have a picnic
  • Puzzles
  • Story time, read alone or together or maybe create a theatre!
  • Visit your local library or playground.

Whatever you get up to these holidays, stay safe, have fun and be kind to one another.

Regards,

Marta Kulger (MHiPS Leader)
