Welcome to the Koala Class!

Literacy

In Koala Class, our K–1 students have been exploring the beautiful text Florette by Anna Walker as part of our literacy learning. Through this story, students have been discussing the main character, Mae, and how she feels as she moves to a new home in the city. Students have been making connections to the text, sharing their own ideas about change, belonging and finding beauty in unexpected places.

Students have also been building their vocabulary and comprehension skills by looking closely at the illustrations and discussing how pictures help tell the story. They have been learning to describe characters, settings and events, as well as share their thoughts using complete sentences. It has been wonderful to see the children growing in confidence as they talk about the story, respond to questions and use their ideas from Florette in their writing.

Maths

In Koala Class, our Year 1 students have been deepening their understanding of how numbers are made up of smaller parts. They have been using hands on materials such as ten frames, number bonds, bar models and base ten blocks to explore how numbers can be partitioned into tens and ones. This learning is helping students build confidence with early addition and subtraction strategies, as they begin to understand how quantities can be joined, separated and represented in different ways. Our clever Kindergarten student is also extended on a daily basis, as he loves to jump into the Stage One Unit and continue to extend his learning. 

Kindergarten have been busy exploring two dimensional shapes. We have been learning to identify, name, make and describe shapes, while noticing features such as sides and corners. We have used a variety of classroom materials to create shapes and have been sorting them in different ways, including by colour, size and shape features. We have also begun exploring the concept of area through practical activities, helping them see how maths can be found all around us.
