Grade 1 & 2

Students in grades 1 and 2 have painted, collaged, and constructed autumn trees, used the oil pastel/food dye resist technique to create a beanie, made a woollen pompom, and collaged a snowman from a bird's eye perspective.

The students used warm colours to paint an ombre autumn leaf (ombre painting is the technique blending one colour seamlessly into the next, just like a sunset), and used cool colours to paint the background.

Using a foam sheet and printing ink, students in grade 3 explored print making through drawing and printing a snowman, while grade 4 students designed a radial-symmetry printing.

Steps:

  1. transfer their design to printing foam block
  2. practice printing on large white paper
  3. do final printing onto previously painted concentric circle design

Grade 5 & 6

Students designed a muli-media artwork on a natural disaster of their choice. They strove to include the feeling of emotion within their piece and to convey a 'story'. These may have included such ideas as:

  • before and after images of a bushfire and subsequent regrowth, which provide a feeling of hope for recovery
  • a family quickly packing a car with a bush fire on its way, conveying a sense of panic and rush, and also of family connections
  • people in a township working together to lay down sand bags against a rising river, which shows a feeling of connection through community spirit and shared purpose.

Similar to the grade 4 studetns, the grade 5 and 6 students explored patterns and symmetry through designing an artwork to be transferred onto a sheet of foam. They used printing ink and their foam block to create a radial-symmetry artwork.
