Grade 3 and 4

Term 2 2026

What an amazing and action-packed Term 2 it has been for our Year 3 and 4 students! We created wonderful memories at camp, shone on stage in our fantastic Aladdin production, and learned valuable health and wellbeing lessons through Life Ed. Students showed great determination at Cross Country, enjoyed the excitement of The Big Freeze, and proudly welcomed families to our Open Morning. We shared a special Mother's Day Breakfast to celebrate the important people in our lives, competed enthusiastically in interschool sports, and loved coming together for our Grade 3/4 Breakfast. From performances and sporting events to special celebrations and learning opportunities, Term 2 has been filled with fun, friendship, teamwork, and unforgettable experiences. We wish everyone a safe and happy holiday break!

Camp

Our Year 3/4 Camp at CYC Phillip Island was an unforgettable experience filled with adventure, learning and fun. Students challenged themselves on the flying fox, giant swing, archery and rock climbing wall, showing great courage and teamwork throughout the camp. We also enjoyed visiting the Penguin Parade, Amazing Things and Churchill Island, where students learned about the area's history and wildlife. A special highlight was watching the pelican feeding and seeing these magnificent birds up close. Camp was a wonderful opportunity for students to build independence, create lasting memories and strengthen friendships.

Some of the highlights of camp for the students were

"Watching the pelicans get hand-fed!" Penelope

"Going through the maze." Oscar

"I liked it when you pulled the string and swung back quickly on the big swing." Harvey G

"Finding out the cabins with all of my friends." Amelia

"The giant swing and spending time with my friends in my cabin." Darcy

Inquiry

This term in Inquiry, students completed their unit exploring the historical significance of First Contact between Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and European settlers during the time of the First Fleet. Throughout the unit, students investigated the reasons for the First Fleet's voyage, the experiences of those who travelled to Australia, and the perspectives of both Aboriginal peoples and European settlers following settlement. They examined the positive and negative impacts of these interactions and developed an understanding of continuity and change, historical perspectives, and the lasting effects of colonisation on Australia’s First Peoples. To conclude the unit, students applied their research skills by creating a biography of a significant historical figure connected to this period, showcasing their understanding of the people and events that shaped Australia’s history.

English

Throughout this term, students have been immersed in our English learning through the class novel, Storm Boy. We thoroughly enjoyed finishing the novel and deepening our understanding of its themes, characters and setting. To conclude our study, students watched the film adaptation and engaged in rich discussions comparing and contrasting the movie with the novel, identifying similarities, differences and the impact of each medium on the story.

As part of our learning, students researched pelicans and the Coorong region to support the development of informative writing pieces. A particular highlight was spotting real pelicans on our journey to camp, which brought our learning to life and helped students make meaningful connections between the text and the real world.

Students have also continued to strengthen their literacy skills through regular grammar, spelling and handwriting lessons, with a focus on accuracy, presentation and language conventions.

Mathematics

In Mathematics this term, students continued to build on their understanding of geometry and number concepts. Following our unit on two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes, where students explored geometric properties, symmetry and shape design, students successfully completed their Number and Algebra unit on fractions and decimals.

Throughout the fractions unit, students learned to recognise, represent, compare and order fractions, as well as identify equivalent fractions using visual models and number lines. They explored the relationship between fractions and decimals by representing tenths and hundredths and understanding decimals as another way of expressing fractional quantities. Students demonstrated their learning through a range of practical activities and problem-solving tasks, while developing confidence in explaining and justifying their mathematical thinking. It has been wonderful to see students apply their knowledge and show growth in their understanding of these important mathematical concepts.

Thrive

One of the highlights of the term was our annual Big Freeze event! Students loved cheering on as brave staff members and other adults took their turn being dunked in the freezing cold water tank. There was plenty of laughter and excitement throughout the day, with students also enjoying the popular slip and slide activity. Adding to the fun was the special toastie lunch order, which was a big hit with everyone. The event was a fantastic way for our school community to come together, have fun and support an important cause.
