4,000 kilometres of kindness: Supporting literacy abroad
Earlier this year, the Junior School undertook a major clean-out of our classroom readers. Rather than sending them to landfill, we chose to give them a second life by passing them on to communities where they can continue to support literacy and spark curiosity.
Those books have now found a home at Vashist Muni Memorial Primary School, a K–8 school of more than 1,200 students in Navua, about an hour from Suva. Nearly 100 kilograms of readers arrived in mixed-level boxes, and the excitement was immediate.
CET's Literacy Project Lead Advisor, Lisa Fenning, who was there for the delivery, shared:
“They were so thankful. One class even rushed outside to be the first to explore the new books.”
We're extremely grateful to the Rotary Club for generously covering the shipping costs, and to CET for helping make this project possible. Thank you for allowing us to share resources in such a meaningful way.
We're delighted that books once loved by our students will now bring joy and open up new learning opportunities in another school community nearly 4,000 kilometres away.
