Course Information Evening | A strong start to senior pathway planning

Our Year 11/12 2027 Course Information Evening, held on Wednesday 3 June, was a fantastic success with an impressive turnout from students and families. The energy in the room reflected just how committed our community is to supporting young people as they prepare for the transition into senior secondary learning.

The evening provided a clear and practical overview of what makes Years 11 and 12 distinctly different from the high school years. A major theme was the shift from broad, generalised learning to purposeful, personalised pathways. As outlined in the presentation, senior secondary education offers students far greater independence, a wider range of course types and the opportunity to tailor their studies toward future goals. This includes academic Level 3–4 courses, applied Level 1–2 subjects and VET programs that provide hands‑on, industry‑focused training.

Families were guided through the structure of the Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE), including the requirement to achieve 120 credit points across two years and to meet literacy, numeracy and ICT standards. The presentation also clarified the role of TASC in ensuring statewide consistency in assessment. For students considering university, the explanation of the ATAR and how Level 3–4 subjects contribute to it was particularly valuable.

One of the highlights of the evening was the expo‑style layout, where each learning area hosted its own information space. This allowed students and families to have meaningful conversations with teachers and senior students about subject expectations, pathways and workload. We were also fortunate to have representatives from the University of Tasmania and TasTAFE on site, offering insights into tertiary study, training options and industry connections.

Next steps for students

  • Year 10 students should now begin exploring the 2027 Year 11/12 Course Guide (available online here), reflecting on their strengths and interests, and considering which pathway – ATAR, VET, or applied – best aligns with their goals.
  • Year 11 students are encouraged to review their progress toward TCE requirements and think carefully about their Year 12 subject selections, including any prerequisites for future study or training.
  • Families who were unable to attend will be able to access the full PowerPoint presentation on Connect by the end of this week.

Looking ahead

We also wish to flag for Year 8 and 9 families that the 2027 Year 9 and 10 Course Information Evening will be held later this term on Thursday 9 July. This event will provide an important introduction to the next stage of learning and the pathways available in the middle years through elective subjects.
