Reading

This term we have been exploring Young Dark Emu. Students have been answering questions, sharing thoughtful discussions, and learning so much about First Nations culture and history. We are especially excited to put this knowledge into practice as we design and build our own First Nations inspired homes this week.

Writing

In writing, we have been working hard on revising sentences, improving handwriting, and polishing up our punctuation. It has been great to see students taking pride in the presentation of their work. We practised a style of writing called ‘Crosshatching’, which proved to be difficult, but gave some perspective on writing in the 17th Century. We are beginning our explanation texts, writing about How First Nations Australians used sustainable land practices.

Mathematics

Fractions, fractions, fractions! We have been adding, subtracting, and comparing fractions, as well as tackling some tricky worded problems. The students have done such a fantastic job, even if they are feeling a little “fractioned out.” It has been amazing seeing students challenge themselves and take on more complex problems. We are moving onto converting fractions, decimals and percentages after this unit.

Wellbeing

As part of our wellbeing program, students have been working collaboratively to create raps and poems about the importance of “eating the rainbow.” This has been a fun and creative way to combine health education with teamwork and performance skills. Our focus has been mindfulness, moving from fuelling our bodies mindfully to resting our bodies mindfully and the importance of positive sleep habits.

Men’s Shed

Our visits to the Men’s Shed have been a highlight. Students have enjoyed building bird boxes and pencil boxes, and it has been wonderful to see such positive and engaging interactions between our students and the men from the Shed. Some students were naturals on the tools!

Cooking

Cooking sessions continue to be a favourite. Students have been reading and following recipes, working together in groups, and, best of all, sharing and enjoying the food they have prepared. This has been a lovely way to learn practical skills while enjoying time together.
