Exploring Creativity Through Illustrated Books
This semester, our Year 7 students embarked on an exciting creative journey through our
brand-new Art curriculum unit: “The Elements of Art Illustrated Book.” Designed to develop students’ foundational knowledge and artistic skills, this unit encouraged learners to explore the fundamental elements of art - line, shape, colour, texture, value, space, and form - through the creation of their own illustrated books.
Throughout the unit, students were introduced to a range of art mediums and techniques, including watercolour, soft pastels, fineliner, pencil, and more. They were guided to experiment with these materials and creatively apply them across the various characters and visual narratives featured in their books. This hands-on exploration allowed students to express their individuality and imagination while deepening their understanding of how different elements and tools can be used in art-making.
Adding a personal touch to the experience, students also had the freedom to choose the size and style of their books - from mini pocket-sized editions to large-format storybooks designed to captivate and engage. This open-ended approach fostered a strong sense of ownership and enthusiasm in the classroom.
The final artworks were a true celebration of student creativity. Each illustrated book was a vibrant reflection of the skills and concepts developed over the term. The joy and pride shown in their completed works clearly demonstrate how much students valued the experience.
This unit has laid a strong foundation for future learning in Visual Arts, and we’re excited to see how these young artists will continue to grow and evolve through their creative journeys.
Well done, Year 7!
