WOW what a busy term it’s been so far! The 3/4 cohort have had many exciting events happen in the past 2 weeks.
BOOK WEEK / Reading
Last week, we celebrated Book Week, with this year’s theme being 'Book an Adventure'. Along with our fabulous book parade held on Wednesday, the grade 3/4 cohort also took part in exciting activities within our classrooms to celebrate the joy of reading. We read 4 books that were shortlisted for Book of the Year 2025. These included:
After reading these books, students completed various activities that complemented the themes of each book. They learnt to weave paper to make bags, identify calming strategies and draw them on balloons, learnt to translate words in different languages, and paint their core memories.
Maths
Over the past couple of weeks, students have been developing and extending their understanding of fractions and decimals. They’ve been learning to represent fractions in different ways, as well as how to add and subtract fractions with different denominators. Through problem solving challenges, students have shown their understanding of fractions and decimals in real life - from identifying parts of food to reading measurements and calculating money.
We have also begun our new topic on Chance and Probability. Over these next two weeks, students will conduct chance experiments and record their findings using language such as ‘likely, unlikely, certain or impossible’.
Writing
Students have continued working on their narratives. They have begun using their plans to draft, edit and revise their stories. Students have been working on incorporating their sizzling starts, balancing dialogue and narration, and using show don't tell when describing the emotions of their characters. Once they have finished editing and revising their drafts, they'll be ready to publish their good copy next week.
Pascoe Vale Girls College performance: Haunting the Halls
The 3/4s were very fortunate to be able to watch Pascoe Vale Girls College's production of Haunting the Halls. Many students were captivated by the mystery and plot twist in the storyline, as well as the impressive performances, costumes and set designs. Many students were excited to view the stage that they will soon be performing for the upcoming PVN concert. We were very grateful for Pascoe Vale Girls College to welcome us into their auditorium and give an outstanding performance.
Andy Griffiths Incursion
Many students perked up when they heard we had an incursion prepared with the famous author Andy Griffiths. From reading his highly entertaining novels to seeing him interact with us on screen was truly a special experience. Griffiths was promoting his upcoming book You & Me and the Peanut Butter Beast. The 3/4s were giggling at the skits Griffiths had prepared with his team, and were engaged with the choose your own adventure sequence he had prepared. Students were also mesmerised by the process of animation and illustration that Griffith's included. To wrap up the incursion, students were given an illustrating task where they had to draw themselves and a companion falling down a hole into a strange land. Students were highly engaged with the creativity and wonder of Griffith's mind, they had channelled it into their own illustrations.
