Netball Update 🏐

Last Friday, our school netball team played a friendly match against Fitzroy Community School. Both teams had previously met at the Inner North Division Finals, where the game ended in a draw.

This time, our players showed great determination, teamwork, and sportsmanship and came away with a fantastic win by just 2 points! It was an exciting game right until the very end, and both schools enjoyed the opportunity to come together for a fun and competitive match.

A big well done to our team and Ms Barmby for their effort and energy on the court, and thank you to Fitzroy Community School for joining us for this friendly match.

Mathematics ➗

In Mathematics, students have been building their understanding of fractions. They are learning how to simplify fractions, convert between mixed numbers and improper fractions, and apply these skills to complex worded problems.

Students have been practising strategies such as finding a common denominator, adding or subtracting numerators correctly, and clearly showing their working out. They are also developing confidence in explaining the difference between mixed numbers and improper fractions, as well as converting between the two.

By tackling challenging worded problems, students are learning to carefully read the question, decide which fraction skills to use, and check that their answers make sense. This step-by-step approach is helping them become more accurate, confident, and resilient problem solvers.

Writing ✍️

In Writing, students have been learning about the four main steps in writing a narrative: planning, drafting, revising, and editing. They began by brainstorming ideas with mind maps, inspired by seed pictures like a jungle landscape, and then used a Story Mountain to outline their narratives.

Students are now drafting, turning their main ideas into full paragraphs, before moving on to revising — checking that their story is consistent and makes sense. Finally, they will focus on editing, polishing grammar, punctuation, and spelling.

This process is helping students see that writing is about developing and refining ideas step by step, rather than finishing in one go.

Reading 📚

In Reading, students have been involved in a range of activities to build both comprehension and enjoyment of texts. A highlight has been buddy reading with younger peers, where older students act as mentors and role models, helping to build confidence, fluency, and a shared love of books for both age groups.

As we continue exploring The Grandest Bookshop in the World, students are learning to infer character traits and motivations by looking closely at characters’ actions, dialogue, and decisions, and using evidence from the text to support their ideas. They are also studying figurative language, such as similes and metaphors, to understand how authors create vivid descriptions and deeper meaning.

These strategies are strengthening students’ ability to think critically, appreciate language, and deepen their overall comprehension.

PVGC 'Haunting the Halls' Excursion

Our Grade 3–6 students were fortunate to be invited by Pascoe Vale Girls College to attend a special daytime performance of their 2025 school production, Haunting of the Halls.

Students were treated to a highly entertaining and professional production that showcased the incredible creativity, talent, and dedication of the Pascoe Vale Girls College cast and crew. From the acting and singing to the costumes and set design, every detail reflected the students’ hard work and teamwork.

The performance not only provided a memorable theatre experience but also inspired our students, showing them what can be achieved with commitment, collaboration, and passion. Many came away buzzing with excitement, eager to share their favourite moments and even motivated to take part in future productions at our school.

We are very grateful to Pascoe Vale Girls College for extending the invitation and giving our students the opportunity to enjoy such a fantastic event. It was a wonderful example of schools in our local community supporting each other and sharing their talents.
