Year Six

Dear Year Six Families,
As we approach the end of Term Two, it’s been a busy, productive and exciting time for our Year Six students. The classrooms have been buzzing with creativity, collaboration and critical thinking as we wrap up major learning projects and prepare for what’s to come in Term Three. Students have shown wonderful resilience and leadership as they begin to take on more responsibility in their final year of primary school.
This week students also participated in their Year Six Parliament Day! They have been working hard on their speeches, posters and preparing to vote. We are pleased to announce our 30 Representatives representing each classes electorate!

Reading:
This term, students have been diving into persuasive texts, analysing how authors use language, structure and evidence to influence readers. We’ve explored a variety of mentor texts to deepen their understanding of persuasive techniques. Alongside this, students have continued weekly spelling and grammar lessons to strengthen foundational skills. Book clubs have also become a regular feature in many classrooms, promoting discussion, comprehension and a shared love of reading.
Writing:
Year Six students have been hard at work crafting persuasive speeches as part of their campaign to be elected to the Year Six Parliament. They’ve considered their audience, used persuasive devices, and developed strong arguments to convince their classmates. It’s been fantastic to see students creating campaign posters, delivering speeches and showing confidence in their public speaking skills. We are so proud of the leadership qualities being developed through this authentic writing experience. They will then conduct their speeches in the final week of Term Two.
Maths:
Our mathematical focus this term has been on statistics and data analysis. Students have explored a range of concepts, including graphing, stem-and-leaf plots and calculating mean, median, mode and range. They’ve enjoyed working with real-world data and using their mathematical thinking to draw conclusions. Next term, we look forward to diving into fractions – building on these analytical skills to solve problems and deepen number knowledge.
Inquiry
Our Inquiry unit has centred on the central idea: “Government systems may support the rights of citizens.” Students have taken a deep dive into Australia’s government system, exploring the roles of federal, state and local government. They have looked at the structure of parliament, political parties and how elections work. Students also examined global perspectives, learning about the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the role of the United Nations. These discussions have sparked rich conversations about fairness, equity and how people’s rights are protected and promoted around the world. The unit has given students a greater appreciation of the responsibilities that come with living in a democracy and how they can take action to be informed and active citizens.
