Year Four

Dear Year Four Families,

It has been another exciting fortnight in Year Four! On Tuesday, students thoroughly enjoyed their excursion to ACMI. They took part in an engaging session called Controls, Codes and Videogame Mechanics and explored The Story of the Moving Image exhibition. The experience was both fun and informative, offering students new insights into how video games and films are created.

Reading

In Reading, students have been exploring

persuasive texts and developing their ability to distinguish between facts, opinions, and analysis. They have been learning how writers use expert opinions to strengthen arguments and how bias can appear in texts such as news articles and advertisements. Students have also been analysing advertisements by looking closely at features like layout, slogans, and design elements used to capture the audience’s attention. Alongside this, students have continued to enjoy their Book Clubs, showing great enthusiasm and thoughtful discussion around their group novels.

Writing

Following on from their lessons about persuasive devices and features, students have been analysing a variety of persuasive texts including 'A Pig Parade is a Terrible Idea' , 'Beaches are the Best' and 'Bring Back the Books' to identify language features such as alliteration, rhetorical questions, emotive and modality words which strengthen an authors argument. Students have begun exploring themes in which writers focus on when developing their arguments, and will use this knowledge to compose their own persuasive texts.

Mathematics

In Mathematics, students have been exploring a variety of strategies to help them solve multiplication problems. They have learned techniques such as the “double-double” strategy for multiplying by fours, and the “relate to tens then halve” strategy to solve multiplication facts for fives. Students have also begun investigating the connection between multiplication and division, developing their understanding of how these operations work together.

Inquiry

Students have been engaging with the different elements that the media use to persuade our thinking. Did you ever think about how colour can influence your choices? Or a catchy slogan or jingle? Or how a layout can keep you interested? Ask the year 4 students and they will be able to advise you of the tricks that the media use to persuade audiences to buy or use their products. Students will combine their classroom knowledge and ACMI experience towards the end of term to produce an exciting conclusion to their learning.

Assembly

Congratulations to 4D who were risk takers and performed 'Che Che Koolay' an African Folk song from Ghana at assembly. They were singing and playing instruments with such enthusiasm which they had been learning in Music this term.

Kind Regards,

Year Four Team
