Year Two

Dear Year Two Families,

Our Year Two students are almost near the halfway point of the year and are progressing in their learning. We wish all students and families a safe and restful Term Two school holiday break.

Reading

In Reading, students have continued to read the class novel 'Charlotte's Web'. This has enabled opportunities for students to be able to summarise and discuss with a partner some of the aspects of the book they are enjoying and finding interesting in addition to justifying which character they like and why.

Futhermore, students have been introduced to

the authors; Bronwyn Bancroft and Sally Morgan. Students have started to identify descriptive language to describe places and colours using adjectives, sensory details and visual Imagery. In addition to this, students have started to identify character traits and use evidence from the story to describe a character.

 Writing

In Writing, the students have been exploring interesting leads specifically description leads to describe the setting and the characters.

Students have used various picture prompts to spark their curiosity to begin their writing in an engaging way to engaging the audience.

Spelling

In Spelling, students were learning when to use an "a" or "an" in a sentence.

Simple Rule:

We use a before a word that starts with a consonant sound. We use an before a word that starts with a vowel sound – that’s a, e, i, o, u.

The Rule
  (a)  (an)

a happy helper.

a friend.

an old barn.

an empty milk bottle.

Maths

This week the Year Two's have been exploring different strategies (part, part whole strategy, jump strategy and the split strategy) to read, understand and solve worded subtraction problems.

Students have also been learning to identify different fact families to understand the connection between addition and subtraction.

Inquiry

We have begun our new Unit of Inquiry, where students are inquiring into the central idea "All cultures share the planet with first nations people" by exploring different first nations people from around the world and the places that are significant to them including Australia's first nations people and landmarks such as Uluru.

As part of the Unit of Inquiry, the Year Two students learnt about and celebrated Matariki a Maori celebration of the New Year. Students were able to create kites that represented their own stories and lives. We gathered as a cohort to celebrate the occasion and fly our kites last Friday the 20th. The students also learnt the 'Matariki Macarena' which the whole cohort danced and sang together. 2C performed a second song in Maori to the rest of the students which was fantastic to see. All the students had lots of fun and enjoyed the opportunity to better understand the culture of Maori people.
