Curriculum Update
Students in Year 10 at Goldsworthy have been continuing to work through their CORE subjects of English, Maths, Science, and Humanities. In English, students have been focused on personal writing this Term, completing a personal essay as their major assessment task and linking it back to the book “5 Ways to Disappoint your Vietnamese Mother”. In Maths, students have been completing units involving the analysis of data and statistics. In Science, students have been working through their Biology unit, where they have been learning all about DNA and how we inherit traits and genes from other people. In Humanities, students have been completing a unit all about Civics & Citizenships - timely with the recently held election!
Our electives subjects have continued to run as well, with new electives having begun in Week 9 this term. One highlight out of our electives was our Outdoor Ed unit, where students were lucky enough to be able to go on several excursions across the term including on an overnight camping trip and for a morning of fishing!
Program Updates
More broadly, our Year 10 students have begun the work this semester of starting to plan out what their senior pathway and potential careers are going to look like. This has included an excursion day at Deakin where students trialled out various workshops based in courses that Deakin offer such as Engineering and Occupational Therapy (check out some of the photos below!), mentor sessions where students have been researching about our VCE and our VM programs in 2025, and is going to include our VM Taster and VCE Taster Days in Week 9 and 10 of the term where students will be trialling a day in each of these programs. Students will also be completing a Careers Activity Day where they will learn skills to complete interviews successfully and get to interview alumni students about their career choices to help them in deciding their pathway!
In Term 3, this will lead to our Program Selection day where students make their choice on if they will be completing VCE or VM next year. This is currently scheduled for Friday August 1st with bookings to be made available soon.

VPC Port of Geelong Excursion
On Tuesday the year 11 and 12 VPC students went to the Port of Geelong to learn about careers. Our captain explained stuff about the bay and the industries. When he was at school, his goal was to be a Master Seaman; and he was! He had achieved his goal.
We learned about PIVOT, VIVA and the Spirit of Tasmania. We saw some parts of wind turbines, wood chips and a really long pier at Point Henry, where they unload explosives. It was interesting.
After the information presentation we were allowed to go outside. It was windy and wavy. We had to find our sea legs very quickly so we didn’t fall overboard. Aiden enjoyed being on the ferry because it was very comfortable. Tenayia was pleased she learned about the jobs people do and how much they get paid. Chris kept walking around outside enjoying the wind. His hair was all over the place. We were pleased we had borrowed some jackets from Outdoor Education to protect us from the seaspray. Joanna appreciated that the water was calm. Smooth waves not whitecaps. Alexis was pleased to get out of the classroom and to see stuff. Dakoda could not believe it when her hair stood up straight from the wind!
Overall it was a fun excursion. We learnt about careers in the Port of Geelong and something and would love to go again.

YEAR 12 DEAKIN EXCURSION
Students in Year 12 VCE-VM joined their peers in VCE to attend the Deakin University Waurn Ponds ‘Day in the life’ excursion. Students were assigned a mentor who is a student at Deakin University, who then supported them to create their own timetable for the day. Students had the choice to attend a variety of different tutorials including ‘Money Moves’, ‘Job Journey’, ‘Level up’, ‘Map your Future’ and ‘Just Decide’. Students discussed their current pathway goals with their mentors and had the opportunity to ask specific questions about their career journey.

Midterm 2
I had the amazing opportunity to travel to Sydney with my peer, Mehdi for the ABCN summit. It was an inspiring experience where I got to meet students from all around Australia, each with their own unique stories and ambitions. Throughout the summit, we took part in workshops, shared our goals, and had open conversations about our plans during school and beyond. One of the highlights of the trip was spending time with my mentor, Amy, who supported and encouraged me throughout the summit. She helped me reflect on my goals and guided me as I spoke about my plans for during and after schooling. It was motivating to be surrounded by people who were just as focused on building a strong future. The trip not only helped me grow personally, but also gave me the confidence to keep pushing towards my dreams - Son Lar Ler Wah - Year 11 ABCN Scholar
The ABCN program has truly been an amazing experience. I’m so excited to see what I’ll be able to achieve next with their support. One of the highlights for me was the Sydney trip with our mentors, it was absolutely an incredible experience. I really appreciate my mentor, Martin. He’s honestly the best! He always encourages me to be my best self, and whenever I’m facing a challenge or need help, he’s there for me to lend me a hand. I hope I’m able to give something back to him too, even in small ways. I absolutely loved visiting Sydney and meeting the other scholars. One person who I extremely appreciate from the scholars is Son Lar. She's so kind and genuine, and I really appreciate that I know her. Everyone I met from across Australia was amazing. I enjoyed networking with them because they inspired me and helped me grow. I truly hope I stay in touch with them and especially with Martin even after the scholarship ends. I wouldn’t trade this experience or the people I’ve met through this program for anything in the world - Mehdi Mohammad Aref - Year 11 ABCN Scholar
On the 14th - 16th of May, I accompanied Son Lar & Mehdi Mohammad to the ABCN Scholarship Accelerate program in Sydney. These students not only represented our school with pride & enthusiasm but stepped up to every opportunity and connection presented to them. Being awarded a $7000 scholarship and a having a mentor for the next three years was just the tip of the iceberg. The students spent time with many different leaders across our country, from student leaders to federal MP’s & CEO’s of companies such as Optus, Celvin Klein & Tommy Hilfiger. Make sure if you see these students to ask for their highlights - Jessie Melnik - VCE Learning Community Leader

Deakin Excursion
Year 12 students undertaking the VCE program had the valuable opportunity to join their classmates from the VCE Vocational Major (VM) for an engaging and informative excursion to Deakin University’s Waurn Ponds campus. This event, known as the ‘Day in the Life’ experience, was designed to give students a first-hand insight into university life and future career planning. Upon arrival, each student was paired with a current Deakin University student mentor, who provided personalised guidance and support throughout the day. Throughout the day, students had meaningful conversations with their mentors, sharing their current study and career aspirations. These discussions allowed them to ask specific, targeted questions about university life, career options, and the different pathways available after completing Year 12. The experience provided students with both inspiration and practical advice, helping them to feel more confident and informed about their future decisions.
Study Skills Workshops
One of many study skills workshops over term two that our VCE cohort participated in was Study Skills for Success from Success Integrated. This included a wide range of study tips & methodologies as well as the vitally important character traits required to apply these skills for optimum success. Combining these tools with a live DJ playing the latest music & you now have what Sucess Integrated called ‘edu-tainment’ (education + entertainment). The perfect mix for Gen Z students who need relevant, practical strategies, delivered to them in a captivating & engaging manner. Other workshops over term two were Memory Mnemonics & Time management from Elevate Education.
Vape Prevention
Students at NBC are spreading the word about the dangers of vaping with their peers and how to get help. Across Term One and Two, the City’s Youth Development team and partner CatholicCare Victoria Settle Well, have worked with school staff and senior students at Northern Bay College to increase awareness of vaping harms and empowering them to say ‘no’. Last week we had our Break the Vape barbecue as a celebration of all the work done by these students.
