What's On In Chinese

This term in Chinese class, our Prep and Grade 1/2 students have been enthusiastically immersing themselves in the Chinese language and culture. The Prep students particularly enjoyed learning the popular children’s song Two Tigers (Liǎng Zhī Lǎohǔ). They had a wonderful time singing and dancing along, and confidently showcased their performance at the school assembly, bringing joy to the audience.
Meanwhile, our Grade 1/2 students have been exploring traditional Chinese idioms, known as chéngyǔ. They have been learning the meanings and cultural stories behind these idioms, and creatively expressing their understanding by illustrating the idioms through detailed drawings. Their artwork not only demonstrated their growing language skills but also highlighted their appreciation for Chinese heritage.
This term, the Grade 3/4 and 5/6 students have been extending their knowledge of conversational Chinese, with a particular focus on vocabulary related to school facilities. Through engaging activities and collaborative learning tasks, students have built a broad and practical vocabulary bank that includes key terms such as classroom, library, playground, and more.
In addition to speaking and listening skills, students have also worked diligently on their reading and writing abilities. They have developed a strong understanding of how to write these school-related terms in Chinese characters and accurately match them with their corresponding Pinyin pronunciations. This comprehensive approach has not only enhanced their language proficiency but also deepened their cultural understanding of how schools function in Chinese-speaking contexts.
