What's On in 5/6

Reconciliation Week:

A couple of weeks ago, we acknowledged Reconciliation Week with a special celebration; we held a Smoking Ceremony, led by Wurundjeri Man - Thane Garvey. He shared some of his culture with us by teaching words in his language, such as "Wominjeka," which means welcome.  He explained the significance of the Smoking Ceremony in Aboriginal culture. It is a traditional practice used to cleanse the space, enrich the soiland mark special occasions. The ceremony involved placing eucalyptus leaves onto a fire, producing smoke believed to have healing and cleansing propertiesThe Smoking Ceremony was a meaningful and memorable experience, and a perfect way to honour Reconciliation Week.

Literacy Focus - “Ziba came on a boat”

Our students have been diving into a mentor text Ziba Came on a Boat.  They have been exploring and analysing the vocabulary choices within various passages and how word choices shape meaning and impact the story. We have been impressed with how thoughtfully students have reflected on the text; their responses demonstrate genuine engagement, thoughtfully considering the story’s meaning and making some personal connections.

Numeracy Focus: Exploring Area and Perimeter

This term, our Grade 5 and 6 students are exploring the relationship between area and perimeter. They are learning how to calculate both for a variety of regular and irregular shapes, and are applying these skills in creative, hands-on ways to develop their problem-solving and spatial reasoning. This week, students took on the challenge of redesigning WPS by creating a bird's-eye view plan of the school buildings and outdoor spaces. As part of the task, they calculated the area and perimeter of different zones within their designs. It’s been fantastic to see their confidence grow as they engage with these real-world mathematical challenges.
