Performing Arts

Year 3 Students explored orchestral music this term, looking at the layout of an orchestra then, listening to the exciting piece of music composed by the Russian composer; Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1900.

Students listened intently so they could complete a music reflection. They were also asked to creatively use hand and body movements to reflect the erratic sounds produced by the instruments. What great work!

Year 4 students impressed me with a lyric challenge. They had to sing to the Aussie folk song, ‘Kookaburra Sits in the Old Gum Tree,’ then creatively insert their own lyrics after looking at the form of the song. These are some of the completed works including a video of dance movements which bring their new lyrics to life!

Year 5 students have been learning about off-beat rhythms this term. They have enjoyed playing a calypso song, ‘Tinga-Layo’ using chroma-note colours to help them to learn reading musical notes. Students chose keyboard, desk bells, chime bars, glockenspiel, marimba, metallophone or xylophone when playing the ostinatos (a musical repeated pattern) whilst the song was sung and played on guitar.

Then in groups, students using untuned percussion instruments sang and played the ostinatos by themselves. How clever!
