Career as a Train Driver

According to SEEK, a Train Driver operates, or drives, a train carrying passengers or freight. This is a great job for someone who likes to see different places, and Train Drivers drive trains along a public or private rail network to a schedule. Train Drivers need to be punctual, reliable, able to work in a confined cabin for many hours on end and enjoy solitary working conditions for much of the time. Able to problem-solve quickly and logically in an emergency, Train Drivers must be excellent communicators and have quick reflexes. Train Drivers need to fulfill a number of responsibilities, including:
- Inspecting the train prior to departure.
- Reporting defects to engineers and management.
- Carrying out adjustments and undertake repairs.
- Getting the train from station or depot of origin to destination on time.
- Monitoring the train speed to ensure safe travel.
- Making announcements to passengers and liaising with on-board staff.
- Exchanging information with other drivers, station guards and security.
To become a Train Driver, one has to complete a Certificate IV in Train Driving (TLI42621).
