Year 1 - Werribee Zoo Excursion

On Thursday the 5th of June, the Year 1 students travelled to Werribee Open Range Zoo. As a part of our Inquiry unit, students explored different continents and countries around the world with the final continent being Africa. Our trip to Werribee Zoo included a lesson about what life is like on a day to day basis for people living in villages in South Sudan and Nigeria.

The students rolled corn, hand pumped water and searched for animal footprints. They also engaged in a story telling session with a staff member from South Sudan. The students were also taught about how the tribes were able to keep their villages safe using the communities around them.

The remainder of our day was spent travelling around the zoo visiting the various animals and learning more about them. The students especially loved visiting the brand-new elephant enclosure!

The students thoroughly enjoyed the safari bus ride too, journeying into the savannah while getting up close and personal with many different animals.
